I must say I wasn't sure about this camera but for the price it really is a great little camera.
I have a more expensive one but this is great to take on camping trips or when small children are present.Very simple to operate and quite good pictures.

This is the first camcorder I've ever owned. So far I like it. It's easy to use, the picture quality is pretty good and the movie quality is just as good...although at night or in dark indoors it comes out a tad grainy. The mp3 portion has frozen on me twice but only because of the song itself (I never checked what made those songs different from the rest I had loaded so I have no idea why they caused the freeze.)but other then that I am really happy with my purchase.
Others have complained that the battery cover and lens cap fall off easily or break. I've not had the problem at all...as a matter of fact I find the lens cap fits to tight and sometimes is difficult to get snapped on completely. The battery cover does fit loosely but securely and has never fallen off on it's own accord. I think as long as you actually read the direction manual before you run out the door with your new toy you'll find it works just as they say it does.

Don't be fooled by what people say for this item. They say things break by using it or just fall off of this product. So where do I begin, well first off I could not be more happy with this product then I already am. I got this in a nice box and opened it right away. First thing I noticed was its size. It is nice and small and thats the way it should be. However when I saw how small it was compared to what I originally thought, I was worried about video quality. Then onced I recorded things in different lighted areas, I found it to have great quaslity. One problem I did found was when It was dark, this camera deos not do so well in the dark. It just lowers the quality of the video. So after trying it out I was confused a little at how to work it but I found out how to use it right away. I bought the 10 dollar 1G memory card with it and they work perfectly together. The clip on lens protector is a little unsatisfieing but it will do good in the short term. I have not tried the MP3 player because I did not buy this camera for that, however I did try the voice recorder. Everything works great from the Pictures to the videos to the Voice Recorder. This camera also has nice small features like changing the formats of things you record, and all those little things. For about one-hundred dollars this is a must buy. This camera is perfect if your looking for compatibility, and recording movies. Believe it or not if you record at 30 fps on a 1GB card you can record to about one hour and thirty minutes.
Pros:
-Price (Camcorder is about 100$ HOWEVER buy the 10$ GB card because not all cards can go into this camera, believe me its worth the money. The card is cheap and works perfectly for the camera.)
-Quality (Good quality for such a small thing and you can chose from different frame rates.)
-5.1 Megapixels (This is good for cameras, some expensive cameras might not even have this.)
-Memory ( With the card this is a good amount of memory that will allow you to film for at least an hour.)
-Cables and Programs (A CD comes with the camera to install some programs to save the things you took onto your computer, if you don't have anything already.)
-Compatibility (Nice light weight camera.)
-Included Carrying Case (Comes with carrying case to protect your camera even more.)
Cons:
-(Confusing to use at first, it is possible to delete thigs without you knowing what you are doing, however everything is explained in the manual.)
-Clip On Lens Protector (It is kinda bad after a while, because it deos losen, however camera comes with carrying case anyway so thats good.)
-Memory (The built in memory is not that good at all, so buy the card or you won't enjoy this camera.)
Anyway this camera is perfect for filming those little moments in your life, like on vacations or other things like that. You can easily tuck it somewhere where it won't bother you. However if you want PERFECT quality you won't find that here. This camera deos have great quality but its not perfect.
This is a product that most likely you will love or hate, however I really loved it.

I love this camera. For what it does--it works great! It's ultra-compact and fits anywhere--in a coat or pants pocket--and the pistol-grip style make it handy to shoot stuff without missing the action. This makes it super-convenient for traveling--where you don't end up spending so much time looking through an eyepiece that you miss enjoying the view yourself. And the MP3 player comes in handy on long plane flights. No, it's not an HD camera and it shoots poorly under low light conditions. For the price--I was pleased and happy with the shots it took. I'd love to see a higher quality version of this, too. But it's not garbage like some of the other reviewers stated. It has some nice features (the price!!) and some limitations. So if it fits your uses--get one. You'll be glad you did.
The best things about this camera/camcorder:
-it works great in daylight/outdoor conditions
-it is super compact
-it let's you point and shoot pistol-grip style (so you can enjoy what you're viewing)
-it's ideal for video that's going straight to the web (it uses avi, mov, asf)
-you can replace the AAA batteries whenever you want/need to--not a proprietary battery that requires a special charger, handy when you travel in countries outside the US
-you can replace the memory cards when they fill up (and I think the cheapest place to get them is Amazon)
-it doesn't attract attention to itself like large camcorders with flashing led recording lights
-it's nice to have an mp3 player, camera, camcorder, and audio recorder all-in-one--truly a multimedia recording device
But, also beware that there are some things it doesn't do really well...
-it really only works in daylight/bright light conditions (don't even try shooting outdoors at night)
-the flash doesn't really work unless you're shooting within 3' of subject
-the battery and lens cover are plastic and will wear out if heavily used/misused
-there is no external mic jack
-the menu for the mp3 player is limited
-the manual is somewhat lacking and the print is really small

This camera looks cool. But it's so, so not cool.
The people responsible for this device should be ashamed of themselves. This is by far one of the worst products I have ever purchased. EVER.
By the second day the lens cap no longer stayed in place. It "clips" on... but not for long. The camera's internal memory is rubbish and the camera totally destroyed my memory card somehow. It's complelety unreadable. Even with a 150mb card I could only take a few short quality videos. You can shoot more video if you use the low quality settings. And I'm talkin' LOW quality. Worse than any video you've seen online.
More problems include the battery cover falling off without hardly even touching it. The controls and interface are not intuitive. You'll probably end up accidentally deleting files you meant to keep. Oh, and the earbuds that come with the camera/mp3 player/hunk-o-junk are HUUUUGE. They aren't comfortable in the least and the cord is too short. I had the camera in my pocket and when I stood erect, the earphones were violently yanked from my ears. They're obviously intended for Oompa-Loompas.
I'm sure I could have found more problems with this thing, but it eventually died on me for no reason.
Don't waste your time with this. You will be sorely disappointed. In fact, if I could give this product a rating of-10 stars I would do so. I'm so extremely disappointed with this camera.

I paid 99.00 for this little camcorder, thought it would be ideal for my action sports heros in the house, but we couldn't get the videos to transfer to the pc. The menu button would not bring anything up, so overall we just couldn't get this thing to work. A bummer of a christmas present.

Overall, this is a nice digital camcorder for under $150. My only complaint is that still images always look blurred when taken indoors. If you are buying this for taking still images, I suggest you buy a different camera.
I suggest you purchase a SD card with this camera, because the 32 MB built-in memory just isn't enough to fully enjoy this camcorder.

I received this as a birthday present. I have been wanting to go digital and get rid of my film camera. So, I asked for a CAMERA for my birthday. My dear parents, knowing nothing about digital cameras bought me this. It is a neat little camcorder. Very small and compact. I took a few photos with this and found that you had to hold perfectly still and have your object be perfectly still in order to take a clear picture. ANY movement from either resulted in blurry pictures. I didn't think this worked well in camcorder mode or camera mode in low light. The LCD screen was dark and you had no idea what you were aiming at. I agree that the user manual could give more help than it does. It doesn't go into detail on how to do anything with the camera. I had no idea what the different flash icons meant or how/when to use them. And I found that the flash would wipe the color out of your object. For what is spent on this, you do get a lot of bang for your buck, but if you are expecting more you're going to have to fork over a little more to get it. Please do not buy this with high expectations. Mine is being returned simply because I want a camera and not a camcorder which we already have. thank you.
->
Here's the short and skinny on this thing. It makes for a decent stocking stuffer at Christmas or extra birthday gift. I mean, its usually on sale for about $100 and that's about an extra $150 cheaper than an entry-level "name brand" camera. I bought mine for my teenage son who basically wants to dabble with this thing. If your kids, like mine, are extra rough with things, then you probably don't want to spend $400 for a Sony or JVC.
To begin, the package indicates that it is a "5 in 1" device, meaning camcorder, digital camera, MP3 player, etc. Don't think you'll get out of purchasing a separate MP3 player for your kids though. The MP3 player won't fool any teenager, so you'll definitely need to buy a devoted MP3 player. Seriously, the MP3 capability on this thing is a joke. As far as digital pictures, it takes grainy, sub-par pictures, so only a teenager would likely be okay with this. Don't expect good family photos in other words. The camcorder function is basic at best. This is not what you want for recording whatever memorable, precious moments you wish to capture. It's okay for kids to record "silly" things, but if they truly become interested and want to delve into this as a hobby, then you'll seroiusly need to consider splurging for something better.
What actually makes this player so inexpensive and lightweight is actually its Achilles heel. You see, most digital camcorders come with a rechargeable battery. In fact, the rechargeable battery is what adds significantly to the cost of the camcorder. I don't have a cost breakdown, but I suspect it is in the area of 25% of the overall cost. With the DXG, there is no rechargeable battery---but how I wish there were!!! Instead of a bulky rechargeable, this uses four "AAA" batteries. Cool, right? Well, this thing goes through batteries like a Hummer goes through gas. Seriously, four fresh batteries will be consumed in only a few minutes!!!! The bottom line, you'll most certainly need a separate battery recharger and rechargeable batteries to constantly feed this thing.
In short, this is a decent gift IF and only IF you buy a battery recharger. If you desire only the digital camera function, you ought to seriously consider a devoted digital camera as this one is ho-hum at best. Not a bad gift, but it is really more of a toy than a "big boy" camera.

I am amazed at the complaining about a $150 camera/camcorder. When you buy one of these, don't expect it to be like the $900 ones! I have taken several pictures that were clear and high quality. The camcorder does exactly what I want it to do and I am extremely pleased with this unit. DXG is on to something here that will help us all, but they are not perfect. This unit is exactly what I wanted and I will recommend it to anyone in the market for a camera camcorder that is easy on the pocketbook!

It's a nifty little gadget for the price, but I'm disappointed in it. I gave it 3 stars because of the mp3 and voice recorder functions (which I didn't want anyways). I'm disappointed in it due to the fact that my cheap Kodak digital camera takes better quality photos and VIDEOS than this camcorder. It's a camcorder, so it's not made to take high quality photos, meaning the flash is absolutely useless. If only the light could stay on during video, then I'd be satisfied with it. When taking pictures with the flash, the photos turn brownish red (no, I didn't have the Sephia effect turned on). The video quality is terrible. If you move even a little, the video becomes choppy, and it's also grainy.

Received the DXG-506V yesterday and was surprised to find out that it had no tripod mount. Many sites showed a light and tripod as optional accessories for this unit but there is no way to mount these accessories to the cam. This is kind of like false advertising. This is a no deal for me because the cam is so dark in normal indoor lighting situations as compared to other cams at similar prices (like the optimus that radio shack sells) and there is also no image stabilization. Geez, how hard would it have been to put a simple ΒΌ inch plastic mount on the bottom. As for sound, the built in microphone produces too much hiss and is located in a place that does not allow it to pick up the voices and sounds of what you are shooting. You can hear yourself talking great but not the person you are shooting. That is pretty bad. The resulting audio with the hiss sounds like a cheap 1970's cassette tape recorder.
The best thing this cam has going for it is that it can save movies in AVI, MOV or ASX format at different resolutions which is why I got it in the first place. It is also pretty easy to learn and its buttons and functions seem fairly logical. It also has a lens cap.
My advice to DXG is this.
1. Add a tripod mount.
2. Move the microphone forward and do something about that hiss and tinny sound or perhaps add a mic jack so that I can use an external microphone. That would be sweet.
3. Improve the cam so that it will do a better job in normal indoor lighting situations. The optional settings do nothing to improve this. I tried them all.
Bottom line is that I would have kept this cam if it had a tripod mount. There are just too many situations that this comes in handy and it would have allowed me to add a light to the cam for indoor use.

This is a neat little device, An mp3/mp4, player camera, camcorder, and voice recorder, all in a package smaller than a pack of cigarettes. I like the fact it accepts inexpensive recharable AAA batteries, instead of some $20 lithium ion battery. I have a 2GB SD Card in it, and have used it for surveillance of my property when I am not home, documenting road rage on the highway, and recording coversations with merchants and service providers. However the unit does not deliver DVD quality video, or 35mm quality pictures, it is good enough for a personal pocket sized eye witness, and mp3 player.

i am amazed at how many people hold this camcorder INCORECTLY.
you do NOT grip it like a gun, you hold it with your thumb on the bottom of the unit and your index finger and the finger inbetween your index finger on the top of the camcorder where the 3 notches are.
notice how you are not covering the flash, or touching the battery door? i have NEVER had the SD card slot door magicly open, it clicks into place.
again if you hold the camera like a gun, you might be acidently sliding the SD door open with your fingers. THIS IS THE INCORRECT WAY TO HOLD THE CAM.
the flash is activated by pressing LEFT on the ring with the red button, alternatvly pressing right will pause video.
pictures should be taken with the fine setting, and you MUST hold the camera still while shooting ( while the save bar saves the picture )
here is a hint...use a high speed SD card, most standard cards are 32X and are slow at 3 or higher Megapixels. I use a 150X card for fast saving of the pictures which means i do not have to keep the camera still for very long it only takes a second to save a high megapixel picture.
good light is required for the video, pictures i have not had problems with, the flash is fine for dark pictures.
another hint, use AVI for video as it is the least compressed of the 3 options, also if you want night or dark shooting you CAN do this with the camera, here is how, when you play back the video on your pc, turn up the contrast to 75% from the default 50% on Windows media player.
i hope this helps you all.
my only complaint is this....
i noticed on the LCD screen or rather the edge border of the plastic around the screen on both the top and bottom of the border of the screen in the centre there is a cut in the border, i am not sure if this is a manufacture defect or if its supposed to be there, it seems odd that is on the top and bottom border of the screen, and both in the centre of the border. ( you cannot see it head on with the screen, you have to tilt the angle of the screen to see it )
anyone else notice this, it was not like that on the 305v model that i used to have.

I just got this camera yesterday and so far, its simply "OK". I'm a bit disappointed to tell the truth. The flash serves absolutely no purpose not to mention its akward placement; your hand almost always covers it when taking pictures. The pictures comes out dark with or without the flash so the camere is best used in daylight..ONLY, so forget about capturing any night time activity with this camera. The pictures seem blurry and the differnt quality choices seem not to make a difference. The video isn't bad though not enough memory to record much. The memory card slot keeps popping open, but thats the least. The manualis useless. The MP3 player isn't bad either, i'll probably use it more than anything else on this camera, but the problem of memory arises again as the camera doesn't come with any external memory i.e memory card, this has to be purchased separately. Wish I had known this before. My suggestion? Anyone considering buying this camera...DON'T.

Is very simple to use, good quality photos.
If you have big hand its tricky to hold, is very small. The Flash isnt good. TOO MANY FUNTIONS IN EVERY Button

I have been playing with this camcorder since I got it for Christmas and overall I'm pleased with it. On the up side: it's light & compact as your wallet, easy to use (I read all the instructions first), easy to download the pix & vids to your computer. And it's cheap. I've had no trouble with my battery door or extra memory chip coming open, as some other viewers have. On the down side: the built-in memory really isn't enough to allow for much video shooting or picture taking before it's full (an extra memory chip is essential and according to the DXG website there is a certain type that is compatible), neither the instructions nor the website explain certain functions and icons you really want to know about (such as flash operation). I've had better results shooting outdoors, than in. Light makes the difference. But overall I like my DXG and carry it w/ me in my handbag.

First off, I am the account holders husband. If you're expecting to make Hollywood type films then you're going to be a bit disappointed as with most DV cameras. But if you're like me and will use the camera just on things that is for my personal interest, then this little guy fits the bill perfect. Figuring out the settings should be number one priority when purchasing this camera. Without the knowledge of how to use this camera, you will exp. some bad quality pictures and video. This happened to me. I was almost ready to send it back until I actually broke down and read the instructions on the different ways to adjust the quality of pics and video. I had to figure most of it out on my own because the instructions aren't that great in detail. I am a utility worker that work out in the field. Whenever I see something interesting i'll wip out this small econo size camera and either snap away, or roll camera for some pretty good footage. The only complaint that I have is the memory card door. It can and will fling open on occassions. Other than that I really am proud of this camera. I rate the quality as Good for a Digi video cam. I've seen way worse for more.

What can you expect for $150? The 506V takes OK pictures (slightly blurry) and Ok video. This is the multipurpose PixieCam I always wanted but never got. The battery case cover is flimsy and prone to coming off. The best part is that it uses AAA batteries - no difficulty replacing power when you are far from an outlet. My expectations were not that high, so I wasn't dissapointed. In the end, this camera/camcorder is a toy.
